This 8,271-acre state park spans both Berkeley and Lacey townships in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. A visit to Double Trouble is a trip into the past. The park is a prime example of New Jersey's cranberry, Atlantic White Cedar logging and milling industries. The park's cranberry bogs are leased by local farmers, who use the wet harvest method of gathering the berries in mid-October. Visitors can watch the process while the bogs are flooded with water and the berries knocked off the vines by machines. The berries are then gathered for processing. The park also features Double Trouble Village, an active cranberry farm, a self-guided 1.5-mile loop nature trail and several miles of unmarked paths along sand service roads.
A facility of the Morris Country Park Commission, the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center is located on the 44 acres of the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge that the Park Commission is responsible for. The refuge consists of 7,600 acres of varied habitats, where over 244 species of birds and other endangered or threatened animal and plant species live and feed.
Learn the history of the Great Swamp, from the historic battle that kept the swamp from becoming an airport in 1960 to the epic retreat of the Wisconsin Glacier 20,000 year ago that formed the glacial lake bottom you stand on today. Consider the mind-blowing-ness of it all while hiking one of the four trails, totaling 1.4 miles, or attending one of the Education Center's many classes and walks.
The Center also hosts birthday parties and other events.
