The Division of Economic Assistance works under the Mississippi Department of Human Services and helps to promote self-sufficiency and personal responsibility for residents. It supports a food stamp program that offers monthly benefits to help low-income households to buy proper food. The department additionally administers a treasury offset program that is responsible for the collection of claims from recipients of overpayment of benefits that remain unpaid. The Division of Economic Assistance also has an office of quality assurance that performs a federally and state-mandated function and is responsible for the evaluation of sample of the caseload to determine the appropriateness of both active and negative eligibility decisions, case approvals, and denials and closures. It maintains one of its locations in Columbus, Miss.
