The housing authority manages public housing and the Section 8 rental assistance program for East Providence. The majority of people the authority serves are elderly or disabled. The authority oversees four apartment complexes around the city with a total of more than 400 units: Goldsmith Manor, City View Manor, Harborview Manor, and Warren Ave. Apartments. The organization also manages ten sites of family duplexes around East Providence. Executive director is Paul Tavares.
East Providence has a low crime rate, averaging a homicide only once every few years. Police Chief Joseph Taveras attributes that to preventative police work. The police department is authorized for 91 officers and has about 22 civilian employees. Another seven hires are scheduled to attend the police academy in January. The department's SWAT team is now accredited.
The Public Works Department maintains town roads and other facilities such as ball fields, administers building inspections, oversees trash and recycling collection and runs the town transfer station on Crompton Avenue. It also runs the solid waste collection program.

East Greenwich Parks & Recreation Department runs a wide variety of childrens and adult sports and activity programs. EG Rec also sponsors and organizes several childrens and community-wide events throughout the year.
Children's programs range from the winter and summer basketball leagues, summer tennis classes and camps, self defense classes and baby-sitting classes, among many others.
Adult programs include aerobics and fitness classes, softball, soccer, volleyball and basketball leagues as well as several hiking groups.
EG Rec organizes and/or lends its support to such community events as the weekly Farmers Market at Academy Field, the annual Halloween Parade, and several summer concerts and other events.
This municipal department is also tasked with caring for and maintaining town ball fields, parks and other public places.
