This location is home to the administration building and Firehouse 1. The Robertson Fire District services parts of Hazelwood, Bridgeton and unincorporated St. Louis County. Formed in April 1949 as an all-volunteer department with community members paying for service, the department has now grown to 40 paid employees.
The fire district is named for the original town it protected, the Town of Robinson, which no longer exists. The district monitors approximately 16.5 square miles.
The Hazelwood Fire Department is headquartered at Station No. 2, next door to Howdershell Park in residential Hazelwood. The department houses two stations and covers residential, business-to-business, corporate and industrial areas. The Hazelwood Fire and Rescue Department employs 36 dedicated professional fire fighters. Several members of the fire department serve as instructors at area schools or training facilities.
The First Due Fire Museum offers a fantastic display of blaring lights and old fire truck sirens to create an engaging atmosphere for young and old visitors alike. Volunteer and off-duty fire fighters in the St. Louis area are responsible for the museum's upkeep, with one volunteer fire fighter traveling all the way from Jefferson County to do his service. Eric Kiehl, one of three founders and an active fire fighter for the city of Hazelwood, said it was just natural to open an historic preserve. "There were three of us and we knew a lot of people and fire fighters with a lot of great stuff," he said. "We just thought it was our public duty to share it all."
