The Public Works department of Vernon Hills serves the community in the administration and maintenance of the village's infrastructure. It regulates water quality, forestry, waste treatment, recycling, composting, street maintenance, landscaping and environmental education, among others. Its five departments are engineering, forestry and grounds, streets, fleet and electrical services. It also sponsors Adopt a Highway and Pond programs.
