This is the village hall for Prairie Grove is a small community of about 1,000 residents, located in southeast McHenry County, between McHenry and Crystal Lake. It has a quiet, country atmosphere and great schools. The village offers police, fire, public works, and parks and recreation.
The office at this location is the municipal government headquarters of Algonquin Township. It is the largest township in McHenry County, emcompassing Algonquin, Barrington Hills, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Lake In The Hills, Village of Port Barrington, Lakewood, Oakwood Hills and Trout Valley. The township office houses various town departments, including the township clerk and assesor's and supervisor's offices. The assesor's office stays open until 5pm on weekdays.
In 1850, Brooklyn Township changed its name to Nunda. The nearby Village of Nunda, now a part of Crystal Lake, was the first train connection to Chicago, making it the hub of McHenry County.
Sandwiched between McHenry and Crystal Lake, 48-square-mile Nunda Township is one of the largest townships in McHenry County. The population sits at just over 35,000.
The city of Crystal Lake is located in McHenry County about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. The city has grown significantly throughout the years with the population expanding from 14,000 in the early 1970's to more than 40,000 today. Crystal Lake is the largest city in McHenry County. Crystal Lake is best known for its parks and lakes. More than 1,600 acres of parks and open land are located in the city as well as the 230-acre Crystal Lake, which is enjoyed by the residents for swimming, boating, fishing and even skating in the winter. Crystal Lake has two large school districts within its borders, Elementary School District 47 and Community High School District 155. The city also offers a number of private schools and preschools. The Crystal Lake government is comprised of a mayor, city manager and city council. The city council meetings take place the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the City Council Chambers inside City Hall. The city offers police, fire and rescue, buildings and grounds and a parks department.
